The WV RN Board implements the Single State licensure model and is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. To work as a registered professional nurse in WV one must first have a WV RN license.
(THIS IS FOR LAPSED/INACTIVE STATUS ONLY)
Paperless Licensing
October 31, 2010 the Board implemented a paperless licensing system, or a less paper licensing system. During the last renewal season Registered Professional Nurses received a license that is a permanent wallet license. A statement on the license directs an individual wishing to verify the license status to the Board's online verification system. This minimizes the opportunity for fraud related to copying the license, and assures the most current license information is reviewed on the web site. Board Action Regarding Mountain State University
The WV RN Board (Board) has received many calls regarding the accreditation status of Mountain State University School of Nursing (MSU-SON). The Board met on Friday, November 12, 2010 and more recently on Friday, January 13, 2012 to review the program and determine accreditation status. The letter documenting the Board's decisions reagarding MSU-SON is provided via the links above. For questions related to MSU-SON's accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) you must contact those agencies directly. To ask questions about the WV RN Board's decision regarding accreditation please e-mail
rnboard@wv.gov and place MSU in the subject line.
The Board's online verification system is maintained and controlled by the Board. The informtion is live and considered as a primary source for verification of this information. This information is not accessible to input from any other source. Notification of disciplinary action, if applicable, is posted to the site promptly.
PRIMARY SOURCE VERIFICATION:The WV RN website is considered primary source verification and is actually the preferred method of licensure validation instead of viewing the license card. License cards, which are an additional evidence of licensure, may take several days to arrive. If a licensee presents a paper license card that shows different information than you find on this verification system, immediately phone the WV RN Board office at 304-558-3596 or e-mail
rnboard@wv.gov to verify the information.
WV RN does primary source verification of an initial applicant's nursing education. This process requires a written request and a fee of thirty dollars ($30.00) in the form of a money order or cashiers check. Send the request to

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK INFORMATION
The WV State Police have contracted with L-1 to obtain finger prints for background checks. To obtain a criminal background check have your credit card ready if you are paying online and something to write down the confirmation number of your appointment.
Visit http://www.l1enrollment.com/, click on the State of West Virginia, Click on Make a New Appointment, from the drop down box select WV Licensing RPN for the State background check, then click "next" and follow the online instructions. You will need to make a second appointment for the Federal background check. Follow the instructions above and in the drop down box select WV Hardcard which is the Federal background check. You will be able to complete the fingerprinting for both background checks at the same appointment. For any questions call the 800 number listed on the web site, they are very helpful.
There are fingerprinting sites across the state and should be one near you. You may pay online or at the facility. NO CASH is accepted. In some cases the American Express card is not accepted however Visa is. Take some lotion with you as moist fingertips help the fingerprint show up on the scan. This is a new system. The process is evolving and the equipment is sensitive. Plan for extra time in the event there is an equipment failure or your fingerprints are difficult to capture.
The facility will have the Federal Background cards and will print your fingerprints onto the card. Except for the mobile sites at Beavers, Summersville and Williamson where they will do the ink and roll finger prints on the card. You will then complete the card and send it to the FBI as has been done in the past. As we learn more information we will post it on the web site.
Please e-mail the Board at rnboard@wv.gov if you experience any difficulties so we can provide the feedback to the company.
Thank you for your patience with the implementation of this new process.
